Registered charity provides one-to-one literacy support to children across Hartlepool who struggle with their reading ability and confidence. Becoming a reading helper is a great way to make a difference to a child’s life and enjoy a rewarding volunteering experience. In your reading sessions you will spend one-to-one time with children, talk and listen with them, read and play games on a regular basis. This simple method helps the child build their reading confidence and ability, giving them the skills to succeed in their education. Reader helpers work with children on a one-to-one basis, giving them consistent support to improve their reading ability, increase their overall self-confidence and enjoyment of reading, and help give them the vital skills they need to succeed in school and life.

Reading helper opportunities providing one-to-one literacy support as follows:

Reader Helper 321:
- Support three children, twice a week, one-to-one.
- Read, play, and talk with each child for 30 minutes (three hours of volunteering a week, plus your travel time to a local school).
- We ask for a school year commitment (i.e. three full terms, starting at any point of the year, term-time only).

Reading Helper Role Models - Perfect opportunity for 16-18 year old students interested in developing skills in education and demonstrating extra-curricular commitment for UCAS and job applications.
-Each Reading Role Model supports two children, twice a week, for two terms.
-Each volunteer provides 30 minutes of one-to-one support in each session, a total of two hours per week.

Time needed from Volunteer:
Various hours Monday - Friday: 9:00 - 3:00PM
School year commitment (i.e. three full terms, starting at any point of the year, term-time only).

Skills Experience & Qualifications:
No specific experience or qualifications connected to working with children are required to become a Reading Helper. All volunteers attend an initial training session prior to being placed in a school, with further training opportunities available. Organisation will also provide all volunteers with on-going support through a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator.
